Fourteen cars ‘of the Marque’ plus one Lagonda Rapide paraded at Goathland station on the morning of Sunday 17th May. Members congregated on the platform have bought their all day rover tickets at a generous concession. Most of the ladies fancied a day in Whitby and were seen, with attendant spouses, boarding a diesel multiple unit heading north for Grosmont for the main line connection onward. Others hurried over the footbridge to catch the steam hauled train to Pickering. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and sandwiches were served on the train and we had an enjoyable ride to Pickering through stunning scenery. On arrival there was a twenty minute wait while the locomotive was moved from one end of the train to the other for the journey back to Grosmont. We got off back at Goathland with the idea of taking a few photographs of the cars and see those that had arrived after us. We found that the general public were very interested in the cars and keen to ask questions about them individually and also about the Marque in general. One person in particular needed quite a bit of persuading that all Bentleys had been built by Rolls-Royce since 1933 up until the VW takeover in 2000. There was a wide selection of models on display from 1936 Derby Bentleys and a 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 to a very modern Bentley Continental GT. Families were keen to have their photos taken posing in front of the cars and one gentleman had come with a photograph of his grandfather’s Rolls-Royce, on the off chance that it was there.
In all an enjoyable day both for members and the public and even the weather behaved itself and only rained on the way home!
